What Is a Search Engine Really?

People use search engines everyday and since their conception many different kinds are now available for use. In general, a search engine is a resource that allows users to locate information on the Internet or World Wide Web.
A search engine can be its own entity or it can be embedded in other websites for people to use. The individual using this resource simply types in the information about which they would like more information.
The results of the search usually produce a listing of applicable websites or pages related to the specific topic. Each result or "hit" is hyperlinked so that the individual can easily access the page with a click of the mouse.
There are numerous search engines available for people to use. There are some that are much more popular than others because of their ability to locate more resources and information in comparison to their competitors.
